Questions
Hesalite or sapphire Moonwatch: which should I buy?
The Hesalite Moonwatch (310.30.42.50.01.001, £6,600) uses the acrylic-type crystal flown to the Moon and has a solid caseback; it scratches more easily but light marks can be polished out. The sapphire version (310.30.42.50.01.002, £7,500) is more scratch-resistant and has a see-through caseback showing the Calibre 3861. Same movement in both, so it comes down to authenticity versus everyday toughness.
Which Speedmaster should I buy?
For most people, the Moonwatch Professional: it's the historic model and starts at £6,200 on a nylon strap. If you want an automatic movement or a smaller watch, the Speedmaster 38 (£5,500) is the cheapest new option. The '57 suits vintage-style tastes, and the Dark Side of the Moon suits buyers who want a larger all-black ceramic watch.
Is the Omega Moonwatch a good first luxury watch?
It's a popular choice: a well-known design, a 42 mm steel case, a Master Chronometer movement and a five-year OMEGA warranty. Be aware it's manual-wind, so you'll need to wind it every couple of days (50-hour reserve). If you'd rather not, consider an automatic like the Speedmaster 38 or Racing.
What is the Speedmaster Snoopy?
OMEGA's Snoopy Speedmasters celebrate the Silver Snoopy Award NASA astronauts gave OMEGA in 1970 after Apollo 13. The best known are a 2003 limited edition (3578.51, 5,441 pieces), a 2015 edition (311.32.42.30.04.003, 1,970 pieces) and the 2020 Silver Snoopy Award 50th Anniversary (310.32.42.50.02.001), which is not limited and lists at £10,000 in the UK, though OMEGA shows it as unavailable online. No new Snoopy has been announced since.
What's the difference between the Speedmaster Reduced and the Professional?
The Reduced (1988–2009) was a 39 mm automatic using an ETA base with a Dubois-Depraz chronograph module, while the Professional is a 42 mm hand-wound watch with OMEGA's own chronograph calibre (1861, now 3861). The Reduced is discontinued and only available pre-owned; check its service history carefully, as the modular chronograph can be expensive to service. Its modern successor is the Speedmaster 38.
