Chanel Price Increase: Buy the Classic Flap New or Pre-Loved?
Reviewed by the Nuvinty editorial team
On 23 September Chanel moved its prices again. Like most of its increases, this one came without an announcement. This time it was selective. According to PurseBop's tracking, the rises fell on the newest bags: Matthieu Blazy's Mini Flap and Maxi Flap, and the Chanel 25. The Classic Flap, the bag most people mean when they say "a Chanel", was not on the list.
That leaves anyone considering a Classic Flap this autumn with a question. Does the gap mean the Classic has been spared, or only that it hasn't been touched yet? And does it now make more sense to buy new or pre-loved? Here is what the evidence supports.
What actually changed on 23 September
The increases were modest in percentage terms and concentrated on bags launched or redesigned under Blazy. He was named artistic director of Chanel's fashion collections in December 2024 and showed his first collection in Paris in October 2025. In Europe, PurseBop recorded the Mini Flap Bag moving from €5,400 to €5,600, and the two Maxi Flap sizes rising by €300 and €350. Every size of the Chanel 25 went up by €300, an increase of roughly 4 to 5 per cent. US increases were similar in scale, between $300 and $600 a bag.
This is a familiar pattern. The newest, most talked-about bags get repriced as soon as demand proves itself. The core icons tend to move in the house's broader, scheduled adjustments.
Why the Classic Flap is probably next, not exempt
The Classic Flap was last increased on 2 April 2026. In that round the medium (11.12) went from €10,300 to €10,500 in Europe and from $11,300 to $11,700 in the US. PurseBop noted that this came eight months after the previous increase in August 2025. In the UK the medium Classic Flap in lambskin is currently listed at £9,090 on Chanel's own site. BragMyBag's UK price list puts the other sizes at £4,390 for the Mini Rectangular, £8,780 for the Small, £9,830 for the Jumbo and £10,350 for the Maxi.
Over the longer term, the direction is clear. Potteries Auctions puts the medium Classic Flap at around $2,850 in 2010, against more than $11,000 in the US today. Nobody outside Chanel knows the date of the next adjustment. But the last two rounds were eight months apart, which would put the next one around the turn of the year, and the bags repriced in September show the house is still willing to raise prices.
Not all the wider signals point upwards. Knight Frank's Luxury Investment Index, published in April, found that its handbag category (tracked through Hermès) was roughly flat over 2025, down 0.2 per cent. It also noted that demand is moving towards visibly worn, everyday-use bags. Retail prices going up and resale values going up are not the same thing, and it is worth keeping the two apart.
New or pre-loved: how to think about it
Buying new from a boutique gets you a bag with a complete, unbroken history from Chanel. You also get its after-sales service, and the choice of leather, colour and hardware from current stock (if you can find it). You pay the full current price. Because increases are applied without notice, there is also a mild case for not waiting if you have already decided on a size and colour.
Pre-loved changes the equation in three ways.
- Price is set by the seller, not the boutique. Asking prices for pre-loved Classic Flaps vary widely with age, leather, condition and completeness. A well-used caviar bag from the 2010s and an unworn recent lambskin can be thousands of pounds apart. Compare like with like across several sellers rather than anchoring on one listing. Our pre-loved Chanel Classic Flap page gathers current listings from multiple resellers and marketplaces in one place for exactly this reason.
- Choice goes beyond the current season. Discontinued colours, older hardware finishes and sizes that are hard to find in boutiques all turn up on the secondary market.
- Verification is down to the seller and to you. Since the 21A collection in 2021, Chanel has used a microchipped metal plate in place of the old serial sticker and authenticity card. A bag should have one system or the other, never both. Ask the seller what authentication they carry out and what recourse you have if a third party disagrees.
One caution: the newest designs are the riskiest to buy pre-loved at a premium. Bags such as the Chanel 25 have only been on the market for a short time, so there is little resale history to judge their value by. The Classic Flap has decades of it.
What this means if you're buying
- If you want a new Classic Flap and have settled on the spec, there is no evidence a price cut is coming, and some evidence that a rise is. Waiting is unlikely to save you money.
- If you are open to pre-loved, use the current gap as leverage. Every boutique increase widens the difference between new and a good secondary example. Shortlist two or three comparable bags and compare condition, completeness (dust bag, box, receipt) and the seller's returns policy as carefully as the price.
- Read the seller's authentication terms before you pay. Our authentication checklist covers the questions to ask. Remember that Nuvinty compares listings; the authentication, delivery and returns are handled by whichever retailer or marketplace you buy from.
- Factor in tax if the bag is coming from abroad. HMRC charges import VAT on goods sent from outside the UK, and customs duty on goods worth more than £135. If you buy in person in Paris and bring the bag home, the £390 allowance does not just cover the first £390. HMRC states that you pay tax and duty on the total value once you exceed it. Our landed-cost calculator estimates the full cost before you commit.
The short version
Chanel's September increase skipped the Classic Flap, but nothing suggests it will be left alone for long. If you are buying new, buy when you are ready, not in the hope of a better moment. If you are buying pre-loved, the widening gap with boutique prices is your advantage, as long as you are as rigorous about the seller as you are about the price. For a wider framework, our buyer's guide covers condition grading and comparing listings across retailers.
