Which handbag leather should you buy pre-loved?
Short answer
Grained and heat-embossed leathers — Chanel's grained calfskin, Hermès Epsom and Togo, Prada Saffiano — resist scratches and hold their shape. Smooth ones — lambskin, Hermès Box calf — look finer and mark more easily. Louis Vuitton Monogram and Damier are coated canvas rather than leather at all; Epi and Empreinte are leather. Buying pre-loved, the finish decides how the wear will read.

Why this decides more than the model does
Two identical bags in different leathers age into different objects. A grained or embossed surface hides handling; a smooth one records it. On the second-hand market that is the difference between a ten-year-old bag that reads as gently used and one that reads as tired — at the same age and the same care.
So when you are comparing listings, the material line is doing more work than the condition grade.
Chanel: grained calfskin and lambskin
Chanel's own product listings use two names: grained calfskin and lambskin. 'Caviar' is a market nickname for the grained calfskin, not a term Chanel uses in its descriptions — worth knowing when a listing uses one and the brand uses the other. Patent and grained shiny calfskin also appear.
The physical difference is real and visible: a pressed, raised grain versus a smooth, soft surface. Buyers and specialists consistently report that the grained calfskin resists scratches, holds its shape and hides wear better, while lambskin is softer and finer to the touch but marks more easily and can soften in the quilting over time. Chanel itself publishes no durability comparison, so read that as informed market consensus rather than brand fact.
Hermès: Togo, Epsom, Clemence and Box
Hermès uses more than twenty leathers, all full-grain — the hide's natural surface is preserved rather than corrected. Sotheby's sets out the four you will meet most often on the resale market:
- Togo (from 1997)
- Calfskin with a soft raised grain that resists scratches and water while staying light. Softens and gains a gentle sheen with age without losing structure. Suits the slouchier Retourne construction.
- Epsom (from 2004)
- Heat-pressed with a fine cross-hatch. Light, rigid, holds colour exceptionally well, and resists scratches, water and minor dents. The natural choice for a structured Sellier Kelly, Birkin or Constance.
- Clemence (from 1992)
- Heavier, more supple bull calf with a deep natural grain and matte finish. Exceptionally durable against scratches and scuffs, but more vulnerable to water, which can mark if not dried promptly. Used on Evelyne, Picotin and Lindy.
- Box calf (from the 1890s)
- The oldest leather Hermès still uses, named after the London shoemaker Joseph Box. Smooth and polished, developing a rich patina with age — the finest-looking and the least forgiving.
Louis Vuitton: what is canvas and what is leather
This is the distinction most often got wrong. Monogram and Damier are coated canvas, not leather. Monogram was created by Georges Vuitton in 1896; Damier by Louis and Georges Vuitton in 1888, reintroduced as Damier Ebène in 1998. A coating process developed in the late 1950s gave the canvas the flexibility to be used for soft goods rather than rigid luggage, and Louis Vuitton describes the canvases as offering lightweight, water-resistant durability.
Epi, introduced in 1985, is leather: drum-dyed and embossed with the ear-of-wheat motif, robust, scratch-resistant, firm enough to hold its shape. Monogram Empreinte, launched in 2010, is also leather — the Monogram pattern embossed into supple calfskin, so it drapes rather than stands up.
For a pre-loved buyer the practical consequence is that the vachetta leather trim on a canvas bag ages very differently from the canvas itself, and is usually where a bag's age shows first.
Prada Saffiano
Saffiano is a fine calfskin created by Mario Prada, distinguished by a heat-embossed cross-hatch texture and a characteristic waxed finish. Prada cites its durability and shine; its product pages describe it as resistant to scratches and water. The Galleria, the bag most associated with it, was introduced in Saffiano in 2007.
You will often see Saffiano described as a patented process. Prada's own page says created, not patented, so we do not repeat that.
Choosing, in one line each
- Want it to look new in five years
- Grained or embossed: Chanel grained calfskin, Hermès Epsom or Togo, Prada Saffiano, LV Epi.
- Want the finest hand-feel
- Smooth: lambskin, Hermès Box calf. Accept that it will show its life.
- Buying a structured shape
- Rigid leathers hold it. A soft leather in a structured design slumps.
- Buying LV canvas
- Look at the vachetta trim, not the canvas. That is where the wear is.
Common questions
Is caviar leather an official Chanel term?
No. Chanel's own listings call it grained calfskin. 'Caviar' is a widely used market nickname for the same material — useful to recognise, but do not expect to find it in Chanel's product descriptions.
Is Louis Vuitton Monogram leather?
No. Monogram and Damier are coated canvas. Epi and Monogram Empreinte are leather. The leather trim on a canvas bag is vachetta, which patinates and is usually the first part to show age.
Which Hermès leather is most scratch-resistant?
Sotheby's describes Epsom as resisting scratches, water and even minor dents while holding its form, and Togo as resisting scratches and water while staying lightweight. Box calf, the smooth polished option, is the one that records its history most visibly.
