Why the Birkin is iconic

Conceived in 1984 after a chance meeting between Jane Birkin and Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas, the design was built around a woman who needed a practical yet elegant everyday bag. Each Birkin is made by a single artisan by hand, and supply is deliberately constrained, fuelling decades of waiting-list lore.

What to pay pre-owned

Because the Birkin is famously supply-constrained, pre-owned examples often trade at or above original retail, with a median around £10,000 and many well above that. Exotic skins, rare colours, precious-metal hardware, larger sizes and pristine or unworn condition can push prices into the tens of thousands.
